ABOUT CDP

Coastal Development Partnership (CDP) is human rights focused not-for-profit, and public interest serving research and advocacy organization in Bangladesh. CDP could be considered as a pioneer environmental activist organization for integrating multidimensional issues such as livelihood, biodiversity, knowledge management, environmental governance and human rights with progressive activism towards global significance. CDP) considers her organizational role as a progressive voyage that is always in solidarity with the unprivileged & discriminated humankind. Each people-centered action of CDP through Research, Advocacy, Capacity Building and Knowledge Management either directly or indirectly aims at reducing or eliminating threat to climate change, biodiversity and ecosystem, thus to the sustainability of natural resource base for both the present and the future generations.

Rights-based Ecosystem Approach (REA) is the conceptual framework of CDPs programmatic intervention strategy. REA is a people-centered vision-oriented strategic development approach. REA as a brain-child of CDP encompasses both the present & future context of time, human wellbeing and ecosystem potency. REA focuses on empowering marginalized people for their access to biodiversity resources & ecosystem services for securing livelihood without endangering biodiversity & livelihood of the future generations by disrupting the ecosystem resilience. The development role of the Coastal Development Partnership (CDP) can be categorized into four (4) frameworks (Protection, Prevention, Promotion and Transformation) and ten (10) commitments.

  1. To Provide assistance to victims/the poor and protecting environment
  2. To assist in capacity building of the stakeholders (poor & their supportive NGOs/CBOs) for better livelihood
  3. To provide an efficient and integrated environmental protection system for people of Bangladesh

Prevention

  1. To prevent or reduce human rights violation, people’s livelihood vulnerability and ecosystem degradation

Promotion

  1. To increase people’s chances and opportunities
  2. To create access to  technologies and knowledge support for the poor people
  3. To promote social peace and harmony by reducing social conflict regarding use of natural resources.

Transformation

  1. To redress social, political and economic exclusion or oppression
  2. Social mobilization for generating demand of innovation for poverty reduction and better livelihood
  3. To strengthen pro-poor, knowledge-based and gender sensitive policy approach for improving governance of natural resources in Bangladesh

Mission

The mission of Coastal Development Partnership is to capacitate the disadvantaged, discriminated, deprived and marginalized communities, individuals, peoples organization, grassroots institutions, NGOs, citizens' forums and civil societies to achieve human rights, social justice, pro-poor economic development and environmental conservation.

Goal

Empower and raise peoples voice for ensuring social peace, human wellbeing, environmental protection and sustained poverty reduction in Bangladesh.

Beneficiaries

CDP always stand alongside disadvantaged, discriminated, deprived and marginalized communities for uniting them, sharing resources with them, supporting them in their advocacy and capacitate them for challenging the policies and systems that kept them poor. CDP mainly works with renewable natural resource dependent poor and marginalized livelihood group like marginal farmers, fisher folk, landless farm laborers, indigenous people. Besides, CDP also works with local journalists, grassroots organizers, local NGOs, people representatives and government in order to strengthen eco-friendly socio-economic development and sustainable livelihood of the poor in Bangladesh.

Working Areas

After inception in 1997, Coastal Development Partnership used to work in the seven districts of South West Coast Regionand Ganges Dependent Areas (Khulna, Bagerhat, Shatkhira, Jessore, Jhinidha, Pirojpur and Gopalgonj). However, on some issues like Climate Change, Food Sovereignty, Environmental Governance, Biodiversity & Nature Conservation, water-logging, water rights & monitoring IFIs, Coastal Development Partnership has achieved leadership & expertise to assist both national & international development process. Since 2007, Coastal Development Partnership has been assisting the grassroots level NGOs, CBOs and activists all over the Bangladesh. Although CDP is operating at national level, its priority is focused on all the 19 coastal districts and for direct implementation.

CDP has already expanded her working areas into North-West Bangladesh where CDP has been capacitating 20 grassroots organizations (NGOs, CBOs, Peoples organization and indigenous organizations) to promote human rights. To carry out CDP works in NW Bangladesh, the CDP liaison office in the capital city Dhaka has been upgraded as an independent CDP unit with computers facility, internet access, resource corners, conference room and guest room.

CDP primarily try to cover the Khulna, Bagerhat, Shatkhira, Jessore, Jhinidha, Pirojpur Barguna, Patuakhali, Coxs Bazar, Chittagong, Barisal and Gopalgonj.
