Agriculture and Food Sovereignty (AFS)

The Agriculture and Food Sovereignty (AFS) aims to develop an ecosystem-friendly agriculture and conservation of indigenous varieties of rice and other crops produced in the coastal regions to ensure food sovereignty. CDP is devoted to build a critical view on food sovereignty issues within the community and society.

  • International Food Security NetworkIFSN (Bangladesh Chapter): This ongoing 4-year project supported by the Action AID Bangladesh will be accomplished at the end of 2008.
  • Special Program for Food Security (SPFS): The project was implemented during 2003- 2007 by the support of the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (UN-FAO) through the Directorate of Agricultural Extension (DAE), Government of Bangladesh under Japanese Grant (GCSP/BGD/033/Japan).
  • Rice Diversity and Production in the Southwest of Bangladesh: The three-year project funded by DFID through PETRRA project of IRRI & BRRI was accomplished during 2001-2003 and ended successfully on March 31, 2004
  • Supporting small-scale farming: which includes agriculture extension, credit schemes, irrigation, soil and water conservation, integrated pest management, improved seeds, etc.
  • Seeds, patents and GMO campaign through Seed Network: To save the farmers from the trap of multinational Companies, CDP formed Seed Network. As secretariat CDP organized several seed fair popularizing the indigenous verities seed as well as the promotion of sustainable seed use. CDP also identified 107 kinds of indigenous rice verities and preserved them systematically.
  • Advocacy on Food related rights: right to land, food, livelihood/employment, farmers right, information and access to agriculture resource.
  • Advocacy on food aid and nutrition: Food aid and restocking, grain banks, midday meals for children; national food grain policy, food for work.
  • National agricultural & food policies: national agricultural policies, production subsidies, plant breeders rights, compare agriculture, sustainable technology, and farmers voices.
  • Miscellany: small-scale fish farming; building peasant organizations, coffee marketing food processing, etc.
  • Farmers mobilization: To mobilize farmers, Farmers Forum (FF) is organized. The role & responsibilities of FF is to organize farmers, empowered them and facilitate for their rights.
